Why we made it
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in India, and the most commonly abandoned supplement — because ferrous salts cause constipation, nausea and a metallic taste that most people will not tolerate for the three to six months a correction actually takes.
Haemerange uses Ferric Ammonium Citrate, which is generally better tolerated than plain ferrous sulphate, and pairs it with folic acid and cyanocobalamin so that all three inputs to red cell production are covered together. Each 15 ml tablespoonful provides 160 mg of ferric ammonium citrate, equivalent to 32.8 mg of elemental iron, with 7.5 mcg of B12 and 0.5 mg of folic acid.
It is orange flavoured for the same reason it is a syrup: the dose that gets taken is the only one that raises a haemoglobin count.
Uses
The difference
Four things you can check on any competing label before you decide.
Red cell production needs iron, folate and B12 together. Products that supply iron alone leave two of the three inputs to chance.
The salt choice is the difference between a course that gets finished and one abandoned in week two. Ferric ammonium citrate is generally better tolerated for gastric side effects.
160 mg of the salt equals 32.8 mg of elemental iron, and both numbers are printed. Many labels quote only the salt weight, which overstates what you are actually getting.
The metallic taste of iron is the single most cited reason patients stop. Flavour here is an adherence tool, not a garnish.
Specification
The full quantitative breakdown, so you can compare us against anything else on the shelf.
Each 15 ml (one tablespoonful) contains: Ferric Ammonium Citrate IP 160 mg (equivalent to Elemental Iron 32.8 mg), Cyanocobalamin IP 7.5 mcg, Folic Acid IP 0.5 mg, Alcohol (95%) 0.87 ml (as Ethyl Alcohol).
Adults: 15 ml (one tablespoonful) once or twice daily after meals. Children: as directed by your physician. Take with a source of vitamin C such as citrus juice to aid absorption; avoid taking with tea, coffee or calcium supplements, which reduce it.
Contains 0.87 ml alcohol (95%) per 15 ml. Iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six — keep well out of reach. Do not take alongside another iron supplement. Iron may darken the stool, which is harmless. Consult your doctor before use if you have haemochromatosis or any iron-overload condition.
Questions
It is formulated with ferric ammonium citrate rather than ferrous sulphate, which is generally better tolerated. Taking it after food helps further.
Iron and folic acid supplementation is routine in pregnancy, but the dose and product should be confirmed by your obstetrician.
That is a normal and harmless effect of oral iron. It is not a cause for concern.
Haemoglobin typically begins to respond within a few weeks, but stores take three to six months to refill. Do not stop early just because you feel better.
